The 21st SC Regiment was organized November 12, 1861 and Mustered into service January 1862, and was comprised of men from the Pee Dee River area. They were in the following engagements: Charleston Harbor, April 1863; Charleston Harbor, August-September 1863; Port Walthall Junction, May 1864; Swift Creek, May 1864; Drewry's Bluff, May 1864; Cold Harbor, June 1864; Petersburg Siege, June 1864-April 1865; Weldon Railroad, August 1864; 2nd Fort Harrison, September 1864; 2nd Fort Fisher, January 1865; Carolinas Campaign, February-April 1865; and Bentonville, March 1865. The Regiment was part of General Joseph E. Johnston's Army which surrendered April 26, 1865, in Orange County, North Carolina. Company E is comprised of almost Chesterfield County residents. In Company D, many of the men were very familiar figures to Chesterfield County. |
