Co. A, 23rd SC Regiment

The 23rd South Carolina Regiment was made up of men from Chesterfield, Marion, Lexington, Kershaw, Marlboro, Charleston, Williamsburg, Linchwood, Richland, Darlington, Lancaster and Sumpter Counties. Some their engagements were: Rappahanock 1862, 2nd Manassas, 1862, Boonsboro, 1862, Sharpsburg 1862, Kingston, NC 1863, Goldsboro NC 1863, Jackson MS (8days) 1863, Battle of the Crater 1864 and the defense of Petersburg, VA 1864 and 1865. Company A was made up mostly of Chesterfield County, SC men, as follows in the memory roll.

John C. Evans, 40, Captain, wounded at Petersburg, Virginia, surrendered Five Forks, Virginia, released from prison June 1865.

Richard T. Mayres, 43, 1st Sergeant, released from prison June 1865.

Angus Douglas, 45, 3rd Sergeant, died of disease at Petersburg, Virginia.

Levi Pate, 42, 5th Sergeant, transferred.

Daniel P. Johnson, 41, 1st Corporal

Henry Y. Brown, 37, wounded at Fort Sumter, lost a foot.

Young John Pigg, 17, died of wounds at Petersburg, Virginia.

Alfred Rollings, 45, surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia.

William W. Shoemake, 34, transferred.

William G. Segars, 43, died of wounds at hospital.

Isaac F. Sinney, 42.

William Teal, 43, killed at Petersburg, Virginia.
