JOHN LEMUEL WOODARD

 

 

John Lemuel Woodward, the son of Abraham and Susannah Mathis Woodard, was born August 1844, in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.  He married Mary Alice Folsom (April 1854 - about 1922, daughter of John Folsom and Elizabeth Holland of what is now Lee County, South Carolina) and they lived in the Woodard's Mill section of Chesterfield County, South Carolina.  They were the parents of ten children, all born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina:


 1.  Liela Arminter Woodard, who married John T. Gulledge
 2.  Gertrude Woodard
 3.  Susan Woodard, who married George C. Melton
 4.  Grafton S. Woodard, who married Martha R. Melton
 5.  William Kite Woodard, who married Maggie M. Brigman
 6.  John Mathis Woodard, who married Sallie
 7.  Minnie Rosella Woodard, who married Jesse Thomas Taylor
 8.  Joseph Hebron Woodard, who married Mary Sarah Elizabeth Steen
 9.  James Zimmerman Woodard, who married Hattie M. Watson
10. Maxey C. Woodard, who married Mattie E. Hancock
 

After the War Between the States, he returned to his Chesterfield County farm and was at one time the County Sheriff.  He died there July 18, 1924 and is buried at Cross Roads Baptist Church.   The only statement in the Chesterfield Advertiser read "the many friends of Mr. J.L. Woodard, a Confederate Veteran, we are sorry to hear of his death Saturday."
