John Simpson Miller
John Simpson Miller was born March 21, 1818 in Chesterfield District, South Carolina, the son of Michael Miller who served as a Lieutenant in the War of 1812 and Frances Welsh and was grandson of German Immigrant, George Miller and Elizabeth Singleton. He married on September 21, 1848, Serena Elizabeth Fletcher (November 25, 1826 - May 19, 1906, daughter of William B. Fletcher and Mary C. Gardner). They were the parents of eight children: William M. Miller, who married Sarah; David C. Miller, died young; Elizabeth Jane Miller, who married Calvin L. Evans; Margaret A. Miller, died young; Susan Alice Miller, who married Lewis E. Gardner; John Fletcher Miller, who married Flora Garland; James W. Miller, who married Hattie Gregory; and Mary Frances Miller, who married Benjamin A. Evans. John Simpson Miller was the original Captain of Company D of the 8th SC Regiment, but resigned that position on or about November 15, 1861. He served the remainder of the War as the Major for that Regiment under General Wade Hampton. One of the wealthiest men of his area of the county, his personal home still stands and is the second oldest house in present day Jefferson, South Carolina. He and his wife are buried in the Miller Family Cemetery in Jefferson. |
