DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD
EDGEWORTH
by James C. Pigg
Review by John L. Andrews, editor Darlington Flag, Old
Darlington District Chapter, S.C.G.S., Darlington County, SC:
-
"Jim Pigg is well known
among Chesterfield researchers for the wide variety of books he has
published. Until now these books have made available to
researchers various Chesterfield primary and secondary resources
(census records, wills, death certificates, newspapers, etc.).
In his latest book, Pigg has shifted gears and written a genealogy of
a family. Several previous books have been written on the
well-known Richard Lovell Edgeworth of Edgeworthtown, Ireland.
These include The Ingenious Mr. Edgeworth and Memoirs of
Richard Lovell Edgeworth.
Pigg's book follows the family of Richard Edgeworth of Chesterfield
County. Richard was the son of Richard Lovell Edgeworth, "a
gentleman of varied interests and attainments,' and the brother of
Maria Edgeworth, a 19th century writer. This current book is
divided into two parts. The first part is a biography of Richard
Edgeworth (Poor Dick) the immigrant, written by Dr. Edgar E.
MacDonald. This section benefits from the many letters written
by members of the Edgeworth family that are included. These
letters provide an insight into life in 18th century South and North
Carolina. Included in this section is also the will of Richard
Edgeworth (recorded in Anson County, NC). Part two of this book
provides a genealogy of the Edgeworth family with extensive
notes. Pigg has compiled an excellent family history in this
section. Numerous examples of deeds, obituaries, tombstone
records, wills, census records, and other sources are cited as this
family is documented through the years. Intermarriages with the
Knight, Evans, Carpenter, Helms, Ray, Parsons, Brewer, Ogburn, Dunn,
Kirkley, Rivers, Baker, Graves, Sowell, McDonald, Lampley, and Horton
families (as well as numerous others) are well documented. The
reviewer hopes that this genealogy is the advent of others from Jim
Pigg.
ANTECEDENTS & DESCENDANTS OF REV. EDWARD PIGG
by James C. Pigg

Pigg's son, Rev. Edward Pigg, had his first land grant on Rafting Creek in

Catawba Baptist Church. He finally settled in Chesterfield County,

DESCENDANTS OF HARDY SELLERS:
BORN MARCH 2, 1757 IN JOHNSTON COUNTY, NC, DIED JANUARY 12, 1835 IN
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, SC
by James C. Pigg
Review by John L. Andrews, editor Darlington Flag, Old
Darlington District Chapter, S.C.G.S., Darlington County, SC:
"It goes without saying that this is one of the most
eagerly anticipated books from James C. Pigg. The progenitor, Hardy
Sellers, left a host of descendants scattered throughout the Chesterfield
County, SC - Anson County, NC region. Pigg acknowledges the
assistance he received from the late Marie Gulledge Wiggins on this line.
The contributions of Wiggins are noted within the text. Pigg also
notes that he has been unable to tie in the family of Matthew Sellers, and
his descendants Levi and McCarroll Sellers, with the Hardy Sellers family.
Thus this current work only addresses the Hardy Sellers line. Hardy
Sellers lived in the vicinity of Chesterfield County during the
Revolutionary War. He served sixteen months during the war.
Sellers married twice. His first wife was Mary Cook, the daughter of
Abram and Feed Maston Cook. Seven children were born to this couple:
John (married Henrietta Norwood), Abraham (married Mary Norwood), Phillip
(married Mary ?), Richard, Mary R., Phoebe (married Jeremiah Gulledge),
and Jane (married Iverson T. Briley). At age 72 Hardy Sellers
married his second wife Lavinia Gulledge, age 19. Two children were
born to this second marriage, Hardy Huntley (married Mary Eliza Sinclair)
and Zilpha Ann (married 1st Dixon P. Gordon and 2nd William Jeptha Gaddy).
To his credit, Pigg includes numerous transcriptions of documents related
to this extensive family. The Revolutionary War pension application and
will of Hardy Sellers, deeds from Philip Sellers to James Ratliff (1808)
and the heirs of Elijah Sellers to Helton J. Sellers (1882), War of 1812
widow's pension application of Jane Baxter Sellers (widow of Rolen
Sellers) and a multitude of obituaries are just a few of the verbatim
transcriptions that are included in this family history. Surely
whenever a list of "essential" Chesterfield genealogical titles is
complied, this book will be so noted. Copyright 2002, 424 pages,
soft cover, full name index. Price - $35.00 plus $4.00 shipping and
handling.
